Programme areas

The programme areas are located in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Evidence shows that the regions Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will be adversely affected by climate change and will impact the regional environment in terms of water availability (quality and quantity) and eventually on the way farmers in the region will respond to managing the soil and water resources and biodiversity. The programme will carefully look at the environmental impacts due to climate change and contribute to a better understanding of the climate impacts on environment.

Andhra Pradesh

  • The programme areas in Andhra Pradesh are located in the Krishna basin. Suitable adaptation measures will be implemented in Guntur and Nalgonda district, where ClimaAdapt will work in close cooperation with state officials. Earlier studies indicate that this area might experience an increased frequency of extreme weather events, especially droughts, in the near future. There will be an increasing trend in water requirement for the major crops grown under rain-fed conditions.

One area lies in the Kalingarayan channel area in Erode district, the other one in the Ponnanaiyar basin in Trichy district. Tamil Nadu’s water resources depend on monsoon rains, and failure in precipitation can cause acute water scarcity, which greatly affects agricultural production.
